"Giuseppe Vasi Views Of Rome And Venice Set Of Three Antique Italian Etchings From 1757"
Three Italian views, two of Rome, of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and Palazzo Sacchetti on Strada Giulia, and one view of Venice, of Palazzo San Marco, drawn and engraved by Giuseppe Vasi (1710-1782) in the second half of the 1700s, who was one of the most important engravers of views in 18th-century Rome and also Piranesi's teacher. The three views are taken from the monumental work: Delle magnificenze di Roma antica e moderna (The Magnificence of Ancient and Modern Rome), published in 10 volumes from 1747 to 1761, consisting of 23 copper engravings with narrative text providing historical and documentary information. The three views are etched on laid paper and in good condition.
The Venetian view of Palazzo San Marco or Palazzo Venezia. The monuments in the view are listed in the caption below: Palazzo Bolognetti; Tower on the Campidoglio; Strada di Macel di Corvi; Part of Palazzo San Marco with hanging garden; Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The view of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is plate 48. The lower legend describes the monuments in the view: 1. Collegio de PP Penietzieri della Basilica; 2. Bell tower; 3. Monastery of the Filippine Nuns; Rectory of the Basilica of S.M. Maggiore.
View of Palazzo Sacchetti on Strada Giulia - the lower caption lists the monuments: Church of San Biagio alla Pagnotta; Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio; Carcere Nuove; Church of the Holy Spirit of the Neapolitans; Palazzo Falconieri; Arch of Palazzo Farnese and Apostolic College.
