François-Louis Lanfant de Metz, born in 1814 in Sierck-les-Bains and died in 1892 in Le Havre, was a French painter renowned for his genre scenes, particularly those depicting childhood. He began his career in the studio of Ary Scheffer and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon between 1843 and 1866. Lanfant de Metz captured moments of children's playful antics at home, in schoolyards, or in the street, often in the company of animals. His works, which were very popular with art lovers, were frequently acquired to decorate homes.
