"Jaï Beach in Marignane"
Oil on canvas,
Signed and dated '72' lower left,
Titled on the back of the stretcher: "Maglione 72 - Marignane en Jaï",
A beautiful work by the Marseilles painter André Maglione depicting a fisherman's hut on Jaï Beach in Marignane.
The artist has captured the atmosphere of early evening, with the moon as the only light. The artist uses a limited color palette of blue, green, and gray tones. A figure can be seen walking to the fishing hut, illuminated by a fireplace.
The artist perfectly captures the reflections of the moon and the cabin on the water.
This work is a rare and beautiful testament to Marignane at the end of the 19th century.
A student of the painter Emile Loubon and close to the painters Félix Ziem, Joseph Suchet, and Adolphe Monticelli, André Maglione exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1866. He founded the Cercle Artistique de Marseille in 1867 and regularly participated in the exhibitions of the Association des Artistes Marseillais.
In 1903, he published a book entitled "Monticelli intime de 1871 à sa mort" (Monticelli Intimate from 1871 to his Death) in which he describes Paul Cézanne's encounters with the painter Monticelli.
Note: Minor old restorations in the sky are visible on the back, but these do not affect the appreciation of the work.
Dimensions: 34 x 50.5 cm unframed and 46.5 x 63.5 cm with its black wood "American box" frame.
