Pair of teal ducks on a lotus leaf
Glazed stoneware
China, probably Shiwan or Yixing
25 cm x 43 cm x 20 cm (9.8 in x 16.9 in x 7.9 in)
Glazed stoneware sculpture representing a pair of teal ducks on a stylised lotus leaf. The birds are modeled in matte clay imitating the texture of their plumage, while the base is coated in a thick, crackled green glaze.
The inscription on the back of the sculpture leaves no doubt as to its Chinese origin and examples of stoneware sculpture representing the same subject are documented in Shiwan, near Canton, while others are attributed to workshops in the Jiangsu province and particularly the city of Yixing. The reverse of the leaf bears a poetic inscription as well as the mark of the name of the artist, Luo Xi or Luo Shi.
