The Bridge, An Important Oil On Canvas By Cécile Bougourd, 19th Century

Artist: Cécile Bougourd
An important Norman landscape by Cécile Bougourd. In the foreground, a Medicis vase filled with flowers rests on a low wall covered with roses and ivy.
A stone staircase leads down to a small stream below.
In the background, a small village is revealed, likely near Pont-Audemer, the painter's birthplace.

Cécile Bougourd (1857–1941) was the daughter and pupil of Auguste Bougourd, a member of the Société des Artistes Français. Her first known participation in a salon dates back to 1886 in Évreux, alongside her father, with Primroses from China, which earned her praise. The same was true in 1888 for Hollyhocks. That same year, she appeared in the catalogue of the Paris Salon with A Sauté of Flowers. It is still listed there in 1889 and 1890. She specialized in the depiction of flowers. Her works are now particularly sought after by collectors. Their quality can be judged at the Musée Canel in Pont-Audemer, which possesses a beautiful bouquet of Lavatera.
