19th Century Painting "the Port Of Camaret" By Auguste Mayer
Artist: Auguste Mayer
A superb and magnificent oil painting on canvas depicting the port of Camaret by Auguste Mayer (1805-1890). This painter, Étienne François Auguste Mayer, devoted himself from a young age to marine painting, a genre he continued to cultivate, and obtained permission to travel to the Orient, Scandinavia, Holland, and elsewhere on state ships. He executed a large number of paintings, which demonstrate great skill and meticulous care in faithfully reproducing the naval scenes he composed with such precision. He also produced numerous drawings, several of which, notably illustrating Brittany, were lithographed by Victor Petit and published in Charles Nodier's "Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France. Bretagne" (Picturesque and Romantic Journeys in Old France). Auguste Mayer was promoted to Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1867. In this painting, a number of ships are visible in the foreground, anchored in front of the famous Vauban tower and the Notre-Dame de Rocamadour chapel. The painting is luminous with vibrant colours; the grey sky allows sunlight to filter through, creating a pleasant atmosphere. The detail of the rigging lends a very realistic quality to the painting. A high-quality work in excellent condition, depicting a period of history, it is signed in the lower right corner and presented in its original giltwood frame.
