Bouillotte Lamp From The Château De Raincy In Gilt Bronze, Louis XVI Period
Two-light bouillotte lamp in chased and gilded bronze with a painted sheet metal shade.
Early Louis XVI period. Original mercury gilding in good condition.
The lights and shade are height-adjustable.
The inscription "RAINCY" on the base indicates that this lamp comes from the furnishings of the Château de Raincy.
The Château de Raincy, now demolished, was built between 1643 and 1650 for Jacques Bordier, superintendent of finances. During the reign of Louis XVI, it was owned by Louis Philippe d'Orléans, and in 1793, the château was seized during the French Revolution.
The building was partially dismantled to recover the metals, and the furnishings were sold at auction to the highest bidder.
An ingenious wiring system allows for the electrification of this lamp, which is completely removable without damaging the object. Please note: A solder joint at the base of the shade adjustment mechanism has damaged the gilding in that area; the finial is not original; and the candle holder is different.
