Paul Malenson (1817–1898) Hounds In The Undergrowth Oil On Canvas Signed And Dated 1872.
Oil on canvas depicting three hounds moving through the undergrowth. In the foreground, a black, white, and tan hound intensely sniffs the trail, while two others appear in the background, partially concealed in the vegetation. The scene is firmly rooted in the naturalist tradition of 19th-century animal painting. The artist accurately renders the anatomy, tension, and movement of the dogs in action, demonstrating his specialization in hunting subjects. The work is signed lower right P. Malenson and dated 1872. Paul Malenson, born in Rouen, a student of Gros and Paul Delaroche, exhibited at the Salon from 1842. He is documented for numerous hunting scenes (Boar Hunt, Hounds, Wolf Hunt, etc.), a subject that constitutes a significant part of his output.
