Sand cast, last quarter of the 19th century
Edouard Letourneau was a student of Emmanuel Frémiet (1824–1910), and this influence can be seen in the finesse of the chasing. Between 1874 and 1907, Letourneau exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français. His Orientalist subjects were particularly appreciated, and he was awarded an honorable mention at the 1887 Salon, and later at the Exposition Universelle of 1900, for his Arab Horse, Returning from the Hunt, whose composition is reminiscent of our Spahi Horse.
Our model depicts a Barb, a small North African saddle horse frequently found in Orientalist works, often shown in hunting scenes or fantasia performances.
