Barbotine, Manufacture d'Este
A decorative polychrome earthenware centerpiece depicting a trompe-l'œil vegetable composition, characteristic of the Manufacture d'Este. The circular dish is adorned with a collection of finely modeled vegetables and foodstuffs: artichokes, leeks, carrots, peppers, mushrooms, onions, eggs, olives, and small fruits, arranged in a natural and balanced manner.
The piece is distinguished by its particularly meticulous glazing, alternating matte, satin, and glossy surfaces. Some elements, notably the eggs, have a matte glaze, while others are finished with a glossier glaze, creating a play of textures that enhances the trompe-l'œil effect and accentuates the realistic character of the composition.
The overall condition is very good. Note a carrot top that has been previously glued back on, as well as a slight crack and part of the leek showing some melting; these are minor defects that do not affect the overall solidity or decorative quality.
This is a very decorative and attractive piece, typical of mid-20th-century Italian craftsmanship, ideal as a centerpiece, on a sideboard, or in a display case.
