Antique Tibetan Trumpet (dungchen), Buddhist Monastic Ritual Temple Instrument, C20th

An authentic Tibetan trumpet known as a Dungchen, a Buddhist monastic ritual temple instrument traditionally used in monasteries during ceremonies, processions, and ritual music.

This impressive instrument is of telescopic construction, composed of multiple extending sections allowing it to reach a considerable length when in use while remaining compact when closed. When fully extended it measures approximately 108 cm, and approximately 45 cm when closed.

Dungchen trumpets are an essential part of Tibetan Buddhist ceremonial practice, particularly within Vajrayana Buddhism. They are used to produce deep, resonant tones intended to mark ritual moments, accompany chanting, and symbolically represent the voice of Buddhist teachings within the temple setting.

The trumpet displays characteristic Tibetan and Himalayan decorative elements, including finely worked metal mounts with stylised vegetal and geometric motifs, as well as turquoise-coloured cabochons. A small side ring fixed to one of the mounts likely served for suspension or securing the instrument when transported or stored..

Condition: Good condition, with wear consistent with age and ritual use. There is a visible dent to the body, clearly shown in the photographs.
