"Lenticular Corozo Snuffbox With Hunting Scene Decoration And Monogram, 19th Century"
A very finely carved, lenticular corozo nut snuffbox depicting a hunt, circa mid-19th century. The reverse of the snuffbox features, against a guilloché background, a hunter and his pack of hounds pursuing a stag amidst trees, flowers, and birds in flight. The top displays a vegetal motif of foliage and berries encircling the lid, which is decorated with hunting symbols, a bird, a dog, and vegetal motifs, with a central escutcheon bearing the monogram "AC" adorned with a garland of flowers. Both the top and reverse are decorated with metal studs, likely silver, which serve to reinforce the structure while also being ornamental. This snuffbox, exhibiting exceptional craftsmanship and quality, is free of any damage or cracks and is in superb original condition. Its original hinge functions perfectly. It has a beautiful, lustrous patina. Weight: 37 grams. and the thinness of the walls demonstrates great skill on the part of the craftsman, all the more so in this exceptional state of preservation.
