Antique Victorian Ornately Engraved 15ct Gold Turquoise Lover's Knot Brooch
Antique Victorian Ornately Engraved 15ct Gold Turquoise Lover’s Knot Brooch
England, circa late 19th century
This antique Victorian brooch is designed in the form of a looped lover’s knot, a motif widely associated in the 19th century with unity, affection, and enduring commitment. The brooch is executed in ornately engraved 15ct gold, with the surface densely worked in scrolling and foliate patterns that exemplify the period’s high level of hand craftsmanship and decorative refinement.
Set throughout the knot are numerous small round cabochon turquoise stones, displaying a vibrant blue-green coloration characteristic of turquoise favoured in Victorian jewellery. During this era, turquoise carried strong symbolic associations with protection, sentiment, and remembrance, making it a popular choice for personal and meaningful adornment.
The intertwined knot form creates a sculptural and balanced composition, while the engraved gold surface adds depth, texture, and visual richness. The reverse retains a hinged pin with traditional C-clasp, consistent with Victorian construction, and is additionally fitted with a hook allowing the brooch to be worn as a pendant, reflecting the versatility often found in higher-quality jewels of the period.
The piece remains in very good antique condition, with only minimal surface wear commensurate with age, and retains crisp engraving and well-preserved settings.
