"the Genius Of Dance", Bronze Cast In Swiss Bronze By Jb Carpeaux
Artist: Jean-baptiste Carpeaux ( 1827-1875 )
A bronze cast of one of Carpeaux's iconic works, from the Dance group, located in front of the Opéra Garnier in Paris. (Created in 1872) Carpeaux, whose official commission for the Opera was completed, was attacked by the censors for depicting the dancers in the nude in public. His work was sprayed with ink and paint, and was ultimately saved in front of the Opera. The face of the Genius is that of the Princess of Racowitza, and the female body was eventually replaced by an androgynous male body.
