André DERAIN (1880-1954) ‘Nude with Arms Behind Back’ Graphite pencil, signed lower right 58 x 34 cm
André Derain, born on 10 June 1880 in Chatou and died on 8 September 1954 in Garches, was a French painter known as one of the founders of Fauvism. He was also a painter of ballet and theatre sets and costumes, an engraver, illustrator, sculptor and writer.
Hailed as the pioneer of a new art form, Fauvism, before the 1914 war, after 1918 he turned towards a renewed classical realism that expressed his taste for theatre and literature, making him one of the major figures of the interwar period. Accused of collaboration after the Liberation, he was censured[1] and subsequently appeared as a survivor of an old world for whom ‘violence gave the illusion of strength[2]
