After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, he began painting, quickly attracting the attention of critics. Well known between the 1920s and 1960s as a poster artist, postcard illustrator, and book illustrator, he often illustrated episodes of the Second World War and created a portrait of the then Crown Prince Umberto II of Savoy and Queen Elena of Montenegro. He enjoyed a long friendship and collaboration with the painter and photographer Maria Bertolani.[1] Tafuri's painting, particularly well-known, depicts Carabinieri Vice-Sergeant Salvo d'Acquisto, immortalized while tearing off his shirt (there is a curious resemblance to many images depicting the comic book character Superman in a very similar pose). This painting is currently on display at the Carabinieri Historical Museum in Rome.
