Alfred Bastien (1873-1955) was a Belgian Post-Impressionist painter known for his figure compositions, landscapes, seascapes, war and genre scenes, still lifes, and portraits. He studied under Jean Delvin at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent and under Jean Portaels in Brussels. He received the Godecharle Prize in 1897. He embarked on a long journey through many countries in Europe, North Africa, the Congo, India, China, and Japan, from where he sent numerous works. A founding member of Le Sillon and a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium, he was a professor and later director of the Brussels Academy. Works in the Museums of Antwerp, Ghent, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. Listed in Bénézit, Arto, and Piron (with signed examples and a working photograph). Listed on Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc...

The painting, never cleaned, only slightly soiled, is in very good condition, with no repainting or repairs of any kind; nothing shows up under UV light.
