Object description :

"Bronze Sculpture, The Kiss Given, After Jean Antoine Houdon (1741-1828), Circa 1820"
A bronze sculpture, chased with a brown patina, depicting a couple of lovers in the classical style, embracing and surrounded by a garland of flowers and foliage. This cast, after the sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon (1741-1848), is entitled "The Kiss Given." It is presented on a column-shaped base of pinkish Siena marble, adorned with its original, finely chased and gilded bronze mount. Resting on a base of black Belgian marble (with a small chip on the back, without impact). This bronze ensemble is of high quality in terms of its chasing, patina and original gilding, which allow it to be dated to the first part of the 19th century, around 1820.

Dimensions: Total height: 28 cm - Height of the patinated bronze figure: 12 cm - Width at the shoulders: 13 cm. Dimensions of the base, marble and gilt bronze column: diameter: 5 cm, height: 14 cm. Dimensions of the black marble base: width: 9 x 9 cm, thickness: 2 cm.

Jean-Antoine Houdon, born on March 20, 1741 in Versailles and died on July 15, 1828 in Paris, was a French sculptor. He is one of the most important statuary artists of the 18th century.
Renowned for the realistic rendering of his works, and skilled not only in working with marble, Houdon also possessed a talent and aptitude for shaping clay, plaster, and bronze. He is often called "the sculptor of the Enlightenment."
