Important Louis XVI period commode in fine marquetry, 18th century. This rare and elegant French Louis XVI period commode features five drawers arranged in three rows, in a masterfully designed architectural composition: two small side drawers flanking a central drawer in the frieze, above two wide drawers in the lower front. The piece rests on four tapered and finely fluted legs, terminating in gilt bronze sabots, lending the whole a visual lightness and perfect verticality, characteristic of the Neoclassical taste of the late 18th century. The structure is richly veneered with carefully selected precious woods, likely rosewood and amaranth, arranged in geometric marquetry with chevron patterns, framed by delicate light fillets that highlight each drawer and panel with great precision. The remarkably symmetrical front testifies to the highest quality of cabinetmaking, revealing a perfect mastery of proportions and design. The finely chased and gilded bronze mounts, including keyhole escutcheons, drawer pulls, and feet, are exquisitely crafted and blend harmoniously with the understated elegance of the Louis XVI style. The fluted uprights accentuate the vertical lines of the piece and reinforce its architectural character. The whole is topped with a perfectly fitted, straight-cut, veined gray marble slab, adding a touch of nobility and contrast to the warmth of the veneers. It is in very good condition. The marquetry is remarkably well preserved, displaying a warm and even antique patina. The bronze mounts retain their beautiful gilding. The marble is in excellent condition, without any significant damage. The piece is sound, stable, and perfectly functional. Thanks to the quality of its materials, the rigor of its composition and the elegance of its decoration, this chest of drawers is a particularly refined example of 18th century French cabinetmaking, worthy of gracing a high-end interior or a discerning collection. Our chest of drawers measures 110 cm in length, 51 cm in depth and 86 cm in height.
