Portrait of a Lady of Quality, depicted half-length, turned slightly to the right, set within an interior with a dark background enlivened by a drapery and a column entwined with flowers. She is seated before a piece of furniture upon which rests a basket of flowers.
The sitter wears a celadon green silk dress with shimmering moiré reflections, enriched with embroidered details and delicately painted floral motifs. She holds a small flower between her thumb and forefinger, a graceful gesture typical of the 18th century, evoking elegance, refinement, and gentle sentiment. Her face displays a luminous complexion and an expression that is both soft and subtly smiling.
Through its refinement, the quality of the drawing, the careful rendering of the textiles, and the attention paid to decorative details, this painting fully belongs to the tradition of 18th-century Piedmontese court portraiture. The work reflects French influences while retaining a more contrasted palette and a pronounced chiaroscuro, characteristic of workshops active in Turin and throughout Piedmont under the House of Savoy.
Very good overall condition. Original canvas. No restorations to report.
The painting is presented in a fine later period gilt wood and stucco frame, in very good condition.
Dimensions (including frame): 142 cm × 114 cm
