Why be born a slave is one of Carpeaux's most emblematic works. Created in 1868, this sculpture foreshadows the subjects for the fountain at the Observatory, near the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. JB Carpeaux was hostile to slavery, and the subject was exhibited in marble at the 1869 Salon and purchased by the Emperor.
