Superb bronze seal/paper knife with a patinated finish, depicting Francis I in armor, leaning on a banner inscribed with the words "All is lost save honor." This piece is rare and of remarkable quality; the seal is not monogrammed. Impeccable condition. Late 19th century. History: The phrase "All is lost save honor" is said to have been written by Francis I in a letter to his mother while he was a prisoner of Charlequin in Madrid after the defeat at the Battle of Pavia. Total height 26 cm.
