Christ On The Cross (corpus) Period: 17th Century Carved Wood, Formerly Polychrome
Christ on the Cross (Corpus) Period: 17th century Carved and formerly polychromed wood Dimensions: H. 103 cm x W. 92 cm A rare and moving carved wooden corpus of Christ dating from the 17th century. The figure is depicted in an expressive pose, the slender, slightly twisted body, arms outstretched, intensely conveying the suffering and spirituality characteristic of religious sculpture of the Baroque period. The anatomical work is fine and naturalistic: a defined torso, visible ribs, crossed legs, and overlapping feet. The face, inclined and framed by wavy hair and a deeply carved beard, presents an expression of sorrowful contemplation. The loincloth, richly decorated with broad, dynamic folds, retains significant traces of former polychromy, notably in blue-gray tones. The whole exhibits a homogeneous antique patina, with wear, losses, cracks, and natural alterations to the wood, attesting to its age and authenticity. Traces of old wood-boring insect damage are visible. Previous restorations are possible. This is a high-quality piece, typical of 17th-century French or European religious statuary, ideal for a collector, a lover of sacred art, or for display in a distinctive interior.
