Oil on panel – Bacchus in a landscape
Bears a panel maker’s mark on the reverse. The same mark appears on Rubens’s sketch “The Lion Hunt” in the National Gallery, London. This work and the panel mark are dated by some to around 1615, by others to as late as circa 1637.
The composition is presumed to be based on a lost painting by Rubens. This painting appears to have remained in his private collection and was purchased after his death by Jermias Wildens. The panel mark and the understanding of the composition seem to indicate familiarity with, and close proximity to, Rubens’s workshop. The handling is magnificent and confident.
Provenance: directly from a private collection
Oil on panel, unframed: 48 × 63 cm
