18th century, 18th century style – green porphyry from the Vosges Mountains, circa 1830. Spectacular baluster vase in green porphyry from the Vosges Mountains and mercury-gilt bronze. This green porphyry vase from the Vosges Mountains, adorned with finely chased and mercury-gilt bronze mounts, is extremely rare. The handles represent the heads of Bacchus, and the central band features a frieze of putti, an allegory of the Arts directly inspired by the works of Pierre Gouthière. The foot is decorated with pearls, stylized palmettes, and ornamental grape clusters, displaying exceptional chasing. The lid, adorned with palmettes and small balls, terminates in a pine cone, a symbol of abundance. Note: Pierre Gouthière (1732-1813), a renowned 18th-century bronze sculptor, is famous for his chasing and mercury gilding. This vase is directly inspired by his work. Provenance: This vase was sold in 1991 by a Belgian gallery and is now part of the De Cicco Gallery collection. Provenance documents are available.
