"Mexican School (20th Century) - "de Lobo Y Negra, Chino" (caste Painting)"
Oil on canvas. Original canvas. This fascinating and striking work offers an interpretation of the "caste paintings" genre, a unique artistic phenomenon that developed in the Spanish viceroyalties, primarily during the 18th century. These works were not only ethnographic documents but also complex canvases designed to catalog and represent the great diversity of mixed-race populations resulting from the encounter between Europeans, Indigenous peoples, and Africans. Through ordered and detailed compositions, castes were presented as a social hierarchy and a system of visual classification, using color and clothing to codify each family's position. These paintings are an irreplaceable testament to colonial society and the Enlightenment's obsession with classification, while also unintentionally celebrating the cultural richness and human dynamism of the New World. Image dimensions without frame: 60 x 45 cm / 74 x 59 cm with a custom frame.
