Antique Chinese Mahjong Set Bone & Bamboo Tiles In Hardwood Case, Complete

Antique Chinese mahjong set dating from the early 20th century, composed of traditional bone and bamboo tiles housed in several finely made hardwood cases.

The tiles are of classic construction, with carved and painted bone faces laminated to bamboo backs. The set includes the full range of traditional suits: Characters (Wan), Bamboos, Dots, Winds, Dragons, and a complete set of Flower and Season tiles. The decoration is finely executed, with strong colours and crisp calligraphy.

The set is accompanied by its full original gaming accessories, including bone and bamboo scoring sticks, dice, markers, and wind indicator. All elements are present.

The hardwood cases are finely made and decorated with inlaid designs and Chinese characters. The main lid bears the characters 雀麻 (Mahjong), while the exterior panels are further decorated with auspicious number characters and traditional motifs associated with good fortune and gaming culture.

This type of set was manufactured in South China, most likely in the Canton region, and sold through Chinese merchants in Southeast Asia. This example was purchased in Hanoi in the early 20th century, then part of French Indochina.

The set is complete and in very good condition, with only minor wear consistent with age and careful use.

Quite simply, this is the best mahjong set I have seen in many years — if you want the best, here it is.
