Napoleonic Box In Carved Wood – France, Early 19th Century
Napoleonic carved wooden box – France, early 19th century
Rare and finely made French box from the early 19th century, carved from a single block of noble fruitwood (most probably pearwood). The lid is decorated with a deeply carved high-relief depicting a Napoleonic military scene: inspection of troops at a bivouac, officers in discussion, and a mounted figure issuing orders, set within an open landscape.
The carving displays excellent depth and clarity, with finely rendered figures, uniforms and horses. The composition reflects the Empire and post-Empire iconography, inspired by French military engravings from the circle of Carle and Horace Vernet.
The box retains its original metal hinge and shows a rich, even aged patina, consistent with its period.
