Museum: Chappe Telegraph Automaton Clock, Early 19th Century, Incomplete
Artist: Ateliers Parisiens
A lovely Chappe telegraph clock, like the one the Postal Museum recently acquired… They provided a remarkable description, thank you!
“The Postal Museum recently acquired a clock designed by the clockmaker Tavernier-Cadet, around 1820, adorned with a Chappe optical telegraph. This bronze mantel clock features a decoration of an aerial telegraph tower. The tower's regulator is operated by a small side control button connected to a spring mechanism that drives water falling into the fountain surmounted by a lion's head. The water is represented by a small twisted glass rod, giving the illusion of gushing water. A clock mechanism integrated into the case adorns the pediment of this tower. When wound, the telegraph is animated for one minute. This object is displayed in Room 4 of the Museum's permanent collections (the telegraph room).” . Illustration: Chappe clock © photo M. Our example also came from this source, but in a found condition, incomplete; the clock movement is missing, some screws have been replaced, and a base is missing. Our photos will show you both its flaws and its qualities.
It is superb and extremely rare.
