RARE PLATE with CAMEO DECOR. In the center, within a circular medallion with a deep red background treated to imitate a hardstone, reminiscent of carnelian, stands out an antique profile depicted in cameo. The head, turned to the left, is adorned with a helmet surmounted by a purplish crest. The rim and base are decorated with wide concentric rings entirely enhanced with bright and burnished gold, finely chased with stylized friezes in matte gold, composed of repetitive motifs of neoclassical inspiration. VERY RARE DECORATION. Mark: In red stencil "DENUELLE Rue de Crussol à Paris", Dimensions: Diam. 23 cm, Condition: PERFECT CONDITION, Period: RESTORATION. Cameo decoration on Paris porcelain is a pure product of neoclassicism at the beginning of the 19th century. It all began in the second half of the 18th century, when the archaeological discoveries of Herculaneum and Pompeii sparked a veritable passion for Antiquity. Idealized profiles, medallions, intaglios, and cameos carved in agate or carnelian became absolute aesthetic benchmarks. Always on the lookout for trends, Parisian manufacturers quickly adopted this new decorative vocabulary. Porcelain lent itself wonderfully to the imitation of these precious stones: against backgrounds of deep red (like carnelian), intense blue, dark green, or deep black, a profile stands out in light relief or in low relief, as if it were a true cameo. These compositions, very fashionable during the Directory, the Consulate, and the Empire periods, can be found on presentation plates, cups, plaques, and luxury tableware sets. Technically, this design is a tour de force: it demands perfect mastery of drawing, colored backgrounds, and gilding. Less charming than a floral composition, it is, however, more solemn, more intellectual – a learned design that displays its prestige without pretense.
