Indian Rosewood Side Table, Indo-english Work, 19th Century
A large circular pedestal table in Indian rosewood, made in the 19th century in the Indo-English style, typical of pieces made for the aristocracy and British administrations in India. The tabletop, of very high quality, features a carefully assembled veneer, revealing a warm, deep grain with the characteristic reddish-brown hues of rosewood. It is encircled by a rich, high-relief carved frieze, adorned with foliate scrolls and continuous floral motifs, executed with remarkable finesse. The massive, carved central column rests on a robust tripod base with widely splayed feet, decorated with stylized foliage and plant motifs, and resting on casters. The whole piece testifies to a particularly accomplished carving technique, combining Western rigor with an Eastern decorative sensibility. The tabletop lifts up.
