"Woven Wool Wall Hanging. Western China. 19th Century. "
Woven wool tapestry. Far East, 19th century. Wool tapestry depicting stylized cranes (Chinese symbols of longevity) surrounded by vases of flowers. At the top and bottom, cartouches contain swastika friezes and the Chinese character Shou, also symbols of longevity. The coarse wool and rustic weave suggest a nomadic people. The white, red, and brown sections are woven, while the black details appear to be painted. The design is visible on both sides, as shown in the last two photos. A very beautiful decoration. Good condition. No repairs. Approximately 240cm x 120cm. We have a matching second tapestry. An identical tapestry was sold in London by Sotheby's on March 7th.
