Eugène Grasset - Sculpture, 1898

Rare color lithograph on thick cream-colored Imperial Japanese paper, signed in pencil by the artist, from an edition of 100.

A very rare and beautiful impression of "Sculpture," one of the most emblematic compositions by Eugène Grasset, a major figure of Art Nouveau and the revival of graphic arts at the end of the 19th century.

Created in 1898, this work represents an allegory of Sculpture: a young woman, calm and focused, wielding a mallet and chisel, leaning on a prostrate male figure. The composition, structured by a drawing outlined in a strong black line and harmonious flat areas of color, perfectly illustrates Grasset's decorative and symbolist aesthetic, often compared to the art of stained glass.

The image was created for the magazine "La Plume," on the occasion of a tribute to the sculptor Alexandre Falguière, and was reproduced as posters, a frontispiece, and prints. Copies of this work are now held in public collections, notably at the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne, as well as in international museum collections.

This copy belongs to the deluxe edition, printed on Imperial Japanese paper and strictly limited to 100 copies, all signed in pencil by Eugène Grasset.
These proofs are considerably rarer than ordinary printings and are particularly sought after by Art Nouveau collectors.

Condition :
Very fine overall condition. The paper shows some slight undulations and discreet creases, inherent to the nature of Japanese paper and the age of the work, without affecting the legibility, the freshness of the colors, or the quality of the print. The print as a whole is very well preserved.
