Dutch painter
Amsterdam 1672–1742 Amsterdam
Still life depicting a Moluccan cockatoo, two parrots, and fruit in a park landscape
Oil on canvas: 87,8 x 71,8 cm
Signed and dated "W. van Royen 1727" (the last digit is erased but still legible)
Frame : 99,6 x 84,3 cm.
According to Arnold Houbraken (1721), van Royen was a pupil of Melchior de Hondecoeter.
Cockatoos appear in Flemish, Dutch, and English paintings of the second half of the 17th century. Ships of the Dutch East India Company transported these exotic animals from Indonesia to Holland, along with spices, textiles, and luxury goods. Few of these magnificent birds survived the journey.
With its elegant white plumage, colorful crest, and curved beak, the cockatoo became a fascinating and prestigious subject in bird scenes.
