Depicting a seated nude young woman, painted around 1950.
Édouard Eveno, 1884-1980, was a French painter, engraver, and sculptor born in Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier. At the age of seven, he began drawing the animals belonging to the animal trainer François Bidel. He then attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Amiens and learned sculpture in the workshop of Julien and Minotte. He subsequently lived in Albert, Saint-Quentin, and Le Havre, and spent a year with the Vasserot Circus, which led him to paint the big cats he observed in menageries in Rouen and Paris. One of his favorite subjects was the lion Negus, a gift from Menelik II to the animal trainer Julius Seeth. On July 10, 1921, he was injured in the leg by a lion from the Marcel menagerie. He won first prize at the Rouen School of Fine Arts and exhibited his works at the Salon des Artistes Rouennais, the Galerie Moderne, the Galerie Legrip in Rouen, and in Paris. He created etchings, sanguine drawings, painted canvases, and sculpted in plaster and wood. From 1919 to 1937, he collected exotic animals at his home, 6 rue Saint-Ouen-de-Pierrecourt, near the Rouen Botanical Garden. His collection of curiosities included the remains of the lioness Lydie, who fatally injured the lion tamer Rosita Gandolfo. In 1952, he had a villa built in the Parc Liserb Supérieur in Nice, where he settled. He was the official painter of Prince Rainier of Monaco. His work is listed in the Bénézit dictionary.
