Louis XVI Period Coffee Table, Philippe-claude Montigny
Artist: Philippe-claude Montigny
Veneered on all sides with marquetry of bottomless cubes in amaranth, rosewood, and sycamore. The front opens with three drawers without a central divider. The top drawer forms a writing surface with a hinged lid lined in red morocco leather and containing a silver-plated writing set including an inkwell, a powder compact, and a sponge box. It rests on four tapered, square-section legs decorated with rosewood compartments in the central section and adorned at the top with a laurel wreath in chased and gilt bronze. The legs terminate in plain sabots resting on flattened balls, all in gilt bronze. The legs are joined by a stretcher shelf decorated with a mosaic of cubes delimited by an amaranth band and a boxwood border.
