"Gauguin painted this work during his first stay in Polynesia (1891-1893). In his quest for the primitive, he drew inspiration for this work from an Egyptian fresco that he had kept in a photograph. The five seated women depicted in the scene are said to be prostitutes who offered themselves to Western tourists in the Papeete market." (Thanks, Wikipedia)
