Water Jug Gour, Calabach, Native Americans People
Gourd, calabash, and woven wicker… It's truly extraordinary that all so-called "first" peoples shared the same intention of preserving their water in gourds covered with woven wicker… From the Native Americans (the Apaches among others), to the peoples of the Amazon, and others in Asia and Africa, the same need has been felt. The gourd is universal. This one comes from a private collection of Native American art. Another similar one is presented online as dating from the American Civil War around 1860. The calabash, or even the inner leather bag, must no longer be very effective, but the outer basket is in excellent condition. On closer inspection, a scar suggests that a second handle originally existed (more practical for the suspension strap)… Beautiful patina, without a stopper or strap.
