"View Of The Two Lighthouses Of Le Touquet La Canche - Oil Painting From The 1850s-60s"
Here is a view of the Canche lighthouses at the tip of Le Touquet. Their construction (completed in 1852) began after numerous shipwrecks in 1843. The civil engineer Pigault de Beaupré drew up the plans. These lighthouses were built back from the shore, 250 meters apart. They were fixed-light lighthouses with a range of 20 nautical miles (37 km) at sea. At the foot of each lighthouse, consisting of an octagonal shaft, a double living quarters housed the keeper and his family. About fifteen people in total lived in this compound. They were destroyed in 1944. This is a rare depiction of these lighthouses in their original state, dating from around 1860. We have not found any equivalent, only photographs from the 1890s and 1900s. There is no signature. A pendant, of the same size, depicting a medieval ruin, is included. Please note, they require restoration: the varnish is yellowed unevenly - fine and long cracks are visible, as well as wear.
