"Jean Garillon - Black And Bright Yellow Ceramic Vase"
A winged ceramic vase by Jean Garillon. 1950s. Black glaze with silver effects on the exterior and bright yellow on the interior. Jean Garillon, known as Jean Elchinger (1898-1981), born in Soufflenheim, Alsace, was a French ceramicist from the Elchinger family of potters, active in Alsace. He adopted the pseudonym Jean Garillon after his marriage and signed his pieces with this name from 1928 onwards. He trained as a potter and ceramicist between 1919 and 1939 and was one of the pioneers of Art Deco in ceramics. His work blends the traditional know-how of the Soufflenheim potters with modern influences, impacting the decoration and techniques of regional ceramics. He exhibited in Paris in 1925 and in Chicago in 1938, and his works are held in several museums in France and Canada. Between 1943 and the end of his life he lived in Saint-Cloud and participated in artists' associations.
