Pocket Aneroid Barometer
"Manufacture Française Armes & Cycles, St Étienne", Circa 1900, Nickel silver and steel, glass, brass, blued steel.
Measuring device used in meteorology and physics indicating atmospheric pressure.
Case composed of a capsule under domed glass housing an internal helical spring, rotating dial with double graduation ("0-2400" and "56-79") with a blued steel pointer. The manufacturer's signature is inscribed inside around the edge of the dial.
The Manufacture Française d'Armes et Cycles de Saint-Étienne, also known as Manufrance, was founded in 1885 in Saint-Étienne, France, by gunsmiths Étienne Mimard and Pierre Blachon. Initially, the company specialized in the production of firearms and bicycles. In 1887, Manufrance became the first French company to introduce a mail-order system.
This type of barometer appears in the company's catalogs under the name "pocket altimetric barometer" (1933 catalog).
The reverse side of the blank case.
A rather rare type of barometer given its small size. See an example from the collection in the Netherlands: The Art of Weather Instruments Foundation.
The instrument is in working order and in very good condition.
