The most famous Japanese artist in ukiyo-e prints during the Edo period (1603–1868), Katsushika Hokusai is the author of a world-famous work: The Great Wave of Kanagawa (1831), which is part of the equally famous “Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji”. The one who nicknamed himself "the crazy of drawing" also became famous with his popular erotic or fantastic prints, as well as by his important collection of varied patterns and sketches: the Hokusai manga. This very prolific artist embodies with his work the Japanese spirituality and the celebration of an animist nature. The discovery of his prints constituted a major aesthetic shock for European artists at the end of the 19th century.
