Micromosaic Brooch With The “doves Of Pliny”. Rome, Mid-19th Century.
Refined oval brooch in polychrome micromosaic on black glass background, depicting the famous subject of the “Doves of Pliny” (or “Capitoline Doves”), inspired by an ancient Hellenistic work described by Pliny the Elder and widely reproduced in 19th-century Roman craftsmanship.
The mosaic shows with remarkable technical precision four doves gathered around a golden krater, in a composition symbolizing peace and natural harmony. The tesserae are extremely fine, allowing for delicate rendering of the birds’ plumage, shadows, and the illusion of depth and volume in the vessel.
The gilt metal setting with twisted rope border is original and well preserved, featuring a pin fastening at the back. Such brooches were often acquired as elite souvenirs during the Grand Tour, and today stand as precious examples of the Roman micromosaic tradition, particularly around the Vatican and Piazza di Spagna workshops in mid-19th-century Rome.
Excellent condition, with no visible tessera loss, original brightness, and fully intact detailing. A collectible or wearable piece of strong historic and decorative appeal.
