On the riverbank, lower right, is the inscription: Callot fec. Taken from the Left Bank, Jacques Callot's "veduta" offers a view of the Seine quays dominated in the foreground by the Tour de Nesle, recognizable by its cylindrical silhouette and smoking summit. In the background, the Pont Neuf—then the most modern and largest of the Parisian bridges—strets out, structuring the perspective. The foreground, teeming with figures, carts, animals, and boats, illustrates how Callot combined documentary precision with a keen sense of composition.
This engraving comes from the series Views of Paris, a set of prints that Callot produced in the late 1620s and early 1630s, likely commissioned by Parisian patrons who appreciated both the topography of the capital and the narrative talent of the Lorraine engraver. These views, which do not constitute a strictly homogeneous series but rather a coherent group in terms of subject matter and style, demonstrate Callot's interest in lively urban landscapes.
With his incisive line, his attention to detail, and his ability to orchestrate a crowd without ever losing the overall clarity, Callot here renews the tradition of the urban view. This print is fully in keeping with the style of the Views of Paris, where the artist combines observation, technical virtuosity, and a pervasive sense of theatricality.
Our engraving is framed with a mat and under anti-reflective, UV-protective glass.
