Known for his provocative work, he illustrated authors such as Baudelaire and explored themes like death, sexuality, and the occult, while also criticizing the bourgeoisie. After illustrating newspapers, he settled in Paris, became friends with Baudelaire, and devoted himself to illustrating literary works. He died in Essonnes in 1898, where he had established his property, La Demi-Lune, and dedicated himself to botany.
