In 1848, General Bréa was tasked with operating against the insurgents on the left bank of the Seine. He had succeeded in pushing them back outside the city walls. Hoping to bring them back by peaceful means, he advanced to parley outside the Fontainebleau gate (present-day Place d'Italie), but he was captured and killed on June 25, 1848.
