Nevers Earthenware Salad Bowl With Dragonfly Design
Nevers earthenware salad bowl with a dragonfly motif. The insect depicted here occupies almost the entire interior of the bowl, which is unusual. Until then, the dragonfly was represented as a small element in rustic decor. The influence of the work of Carl Linnaeus, who in 1758 established a nomenclature for the different dragonflies, is evident. It wasn't until the Art Nouveau period that the dragonfly regained a place of honor. Nevers, early 19th century
