A beautiful portrait of an elegant young woman by Jean François Portaels (1818-1895). Portaels, who studied at the Brussels Academy, was a Belgian painter of historical and Orientalist scenes and religious compositions. He was also a portraitist and painted primarily in oils. He is often mistakenly considered the founder of the Belgian Orientalist school.
