A charming painting depicting a refined scene in an 18th-century aristocratic interior. A cardinal, richly dressed in his red cassock, sits and attentively examines a drawing or sketch presented to him by an elegant gentleman, likely a painter. The composition is lively: the cardinal appears focused and attentive, while the artist, slightly inclined, awaits his judgment with a mixture of restraint and hope. The sumptuous setting—gilded furniture, paintings, tapestries, and vases—underlines the refinement of the environment and reinforces the idea of a salon belonging to an art lover or collector. The painting is signed lower right “B. Borione Paris” and is typical of the work of those late 19th- and early 20th-century painters who specialized in historical and gallant scenes inspired by the 18th century. The painting is presented in a beautiful, richly carved Louis XV-style frame of giltwood and stucco. In perfect condition, canvas cleaned. Frame dimensions: 64 x 56 cm. Stretcher dimensions: 47 x 39 cm. Image dimensions: 44 x 36 cm. Bernard Louis Borione (born in Paris in 1865) was a student of his father and Évariste Luminais. Specializing in genre scenes and interiors, he distinguished himself particularly through his subtle and sometimes mischievous depictions of the upper echelons of the Church. His work, recognized for its quality of execution and its rich palette of reds and purples, was exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, where it enjoyed considerable success.
