Baroque Altar Tabernacle In Carved And Gilt Wood Italy, 18th Century
Important large-scale altar tabernacle, attributable to the Italian Baroque tradition of the 18th century, finely carved in wood, white lacquered and richly water-gilded (guazzo gilding) with gold leaf. The architectural structure is dynamic and elaborately decorated with scrolls, cartouches, foliate motifs and shaped panels, displaying high-quality craftsmanship and strong visual impact typical of prestigious liturgical furnishings.Of particular interest is the central rotating compartment intended for the Eucharistic reserve. The inner structure, composed of two opposing sections, rotates on a vertical axis, allowing opening and closing through a rotational movement—an uncommon and highly distinctive technical solution. The piece is in need of restoration.
